bryophytes before spore dispersal

Bryophyte for Your Rights.

Even though bryophytes appear to cover forest floors and bogs with a lovely green carpet, they aren't as sturdy as your average textured saxony. In fact, a footprint on a bed of moss can last for years. The careful hikers always keep both eyes on where they are stepping.

This puzzling photograph is of an unknown bryophyte that is growing in the moist soil by our back door. If you look carefully, there is some indication that a blessed event is about to occur.
