these things and others

#18

[A-aa! a one act play in Inuktitut.]

We are on the bridge of a large starship. Stars are drifting lazily past the viewing portals. On the bridge are two alien crewmen named Wombat and Numbat, who look a lot like muskoxen

Captain Aluut: (enters, holding his belly. he looks to be in great pain.) Unusakut! Nanguvunga! (he notices Wombat and Numbat.) Umingmait!
Wombat and Numbat: (spin around at attention simultaneously. Wombat and Numbat do everything simultaneously.) Qanuipit?
Captain Aluut: (clutches belly again) Nanguvunga! Angirraqsiqpunga! (attempts to point in the direction of home, fails utterly, and begins to cry.)
Wombat: (turns down the thermostat in an attempt to be helpful.) Ulumi Nilasuqtuq!
Captain Aluut: (groans.)
Numbat: (turns up the thermostat in an attempt to be helpful.) Ulumi Uqurjuq!
Captain Aluut: (groans.)
Wombat and Numbat: (fight over the thermostat, breaking it.) Silatiavak!
Captain Aluut: (screams in frustration.) Taqqavunga!
Wombat and Numbat: (stop fighting.)
Captain Aluut: (has an epiphany) Kaktunga! Qujannamiik! (dashes off stage to find some food.)
Wombat and Numbat: Ilali! Ilali! Ilali! (they go back to their starship crew duties, still looking very much like muskoxen.)

Useful Phrases in the preceding play came from the following dictionaries (1 | 2 | 3 | 4), and were cut and pasted using standard cut and paste techniques. Any spelling errors are therefore beyond the author's ken. Pronunciation hints can be found at the same dictionary sites. Samples of Inuktitut writing will aid in prop and set design, as will a Inuktitut font. The characters and situation in the preceding play were fiction and any similarity to persons or muskoxen, living or dead, is purely coincidental. This play may be freely reproduced and performed as long as due credit is given. The use of Inuktitut in this play is not meant to reflect badly on speakers of that particular language in any way. I'll get to all of the other languages eventually. Blah blah blah ginger.
